Grades Buyers Recognize

Start with the Grade You Already Know

Buyers often start with a familiar grade rather than a product category. We first identify whether that grade is needed as plate, coil, pipe or bar, then confirm the correct product standard.

Structural Grades

Plate, Bar and Structural Supply

ASTM A36 ASTM A572 Gr.50 Q235 Q355 S235 S355 SS400

Common starting points for structural plate, bar and fabricated steel requirements.

Pipe Grades

Pressure, General Pipe and Line Pipe

A53 Gr.B A106 Gr.B A333 Gr.6 API 5L Gr.B X42 X52 X60

Pipe grade is reviewed together with seamless or welded manufacturing route and project testing requirements.

Engineering / Machining Grades

Bars and Machining Blanks

SAE 1018 SAE 1020 SAE 1045 C45 S45C

Used where the material will be turned, drilled or machined into a component rather than simply welded into a structure.

One Important Check

The Same Grade Name Does Not Apply to Every Product in the Same Way

A36 is familiar in structural plate and bar purchasing, but a buyer asking for “A36 coil” or “A36 pipe” may need a different product-specific ASTM specification. We confirm that point before quotation instead of forcing one grade name across every product.

Before Quotation

“I Need Q355” Is Only the First Step

A grade alone is not enough to quote the right material. The product form, size, delivery condition and inspection requirement define what the buyer will actually receive.

Mill Origin

Mill Origin Is Matched to the Order

The mill is selected from the grade, dimensions, quantity, delivery schedule and project requirement. A mill that is a good fit for one product is not automatically the best source for another.

Supply Route

Stock Supply or Mill Production?

Some orders are best filled from available stock. Others need mill production because the size, quantity, mill origin or inspection requirement is project-specific.

Stock Supply

When the Requirement Is Common

  • Common grades
  • Standard dimensions
  • Smaller or mixed quantities
  • Shorter delivery requirement
Mill Order

When the Requirement Is Project-Specific

  • Large project quantity
  • Uncommon size or delivery condition
  • Specified mill origin
  • Special testing or documentation
Inspection & Traceability

Inspection Starts with the Purchase Requirement

Plate, coil, pipe and bar do not use the same inspection checklist. The common starting point is to match the material, dimensions, heat or batch identity and documents to the confirmed order.

01

Grade & Standard

Confirm the product standard, full grade and required delivery condition.

02

Dimensions & Surface

Check the dimensions and surface points that matter to the specific product form.

03

Heat / Batch & MTC

Keep the material identity linked to the mill certificate and shipment records.

04

Processing Traceability

Cutting, slitting or repacking should not break the link to the original material identity.

Basic Processing

Prepare the Material for the Buyer’s Next Step

Processing remains secondary to material supply. It is used where simple preparation before shipment can reduce the buyer's next handling or fabrication step.

01

Plate

Cut-to-size, drilling and edge preparation where required.

02

Coil

Slitting and cut-to-length processing.

03

Pipe

Fixed-length cutting and bevel preparation.

04

Bar

Saw cutting into shorter lengths or machining blanks.

Export Handling

Different Products Need Different Export Handling

A steel coil should not be packed like a plate bundle, and a large-diameter pipe should not be handled like a bundle of small bar. Packing follows the product shape, surface and transport risk.

01

Plate

Horizontal support, dunnage and lifting access matched to plate size and weight.

02

Coil

Suitable cradles or saddles, anti-rolling control and surface protection where needed.

03

Pipe

Bundles for suitable sizes or individual support and chocking for large-diameter pipe.

04

Bar

Multiple straps and support points for long bars; pallets or boxes for short cut blanks when appropriate.

Ordering Questions

Common Questions Before You Choose a Product Page

I only know the grade. How do I know whether I need plate, coil, pipe or bar?

Use the drawing or finished product as the guide. Flat structural pieces generally start from plate; coil-fed production starts from coil; piping projects need pipe; shafts and solid sections normally start from bar. Send the drawing if the product form is still unclear.

Can the same grade be supplied as every carbon steel product?

Not always under the same standard. Product standards differ between plate, coil, pipe and bar. We confirm the correct product-specific specification before quotation.

Should I buy from stock or place a mill order?

Common grades and dimensions may suit stock supply. Large quantities, uncommon dimensions, specified mill origin or special testing are more likely to require a mill order.

Can plate, coil, pipe and bar be combined in one project shipment?

Yes, where the purchasing and shipping plan supports it. Each product keeps its own material identity, inspection records and package identification inside the combined shipment.
