Substrate Route

Choose PPGI or PPGL Before Choosing the Roofing Profile

The same roof profile can be formed from different prepainted metallic-coated substrates. Profile shape, paint color and sheet dimensions do not replace the substrate requirement.

Zinc-Coated Substrate

PPGI Roofing Sheet

Uses prepainted galvanized steel coil as the feedstock.

  • Galvanized / zinc-coated substrate.
  • Organic paint system above the metallic coating.
  • Color, gloss and forming requirements confirmed separately.
Al-Zn-Coated Substrate

PPGL Roofing Sheet

Uses prepainted Galvalume / Al-Zn coated coil as the feedstock.

  • Al-Zn metallic-coated substrate route.
  • Organic paint system above the metallic coating.
  • Do not substitute for PPGI only because the RAL color matches.

The profile can be identical while the substrate is different.

Keep PPGI / PPGL, metallic coating and paint system on the RFQ before comparing finished roofing-sheet prices.

Roofing Profile

Corrugated, Trapezoidal or Project-Specific Profile?

The final roofing sheet is defined by more than thickness and color. Rib height, pitch, overall width, effective cover width and side-lap geometry control how the sheets fit together on the roof.

Wave Profile

Corrugated Roofing Sheet

Regular repeating wave geometry for roofing and cladding projects.

Confirm pitch, wave height, overall width and effective cover width.
Ribbed Profile

Trapezoidal Roofing Sheet

Defined rib and valley geometry used for many roofing and wall-cladding systems.

Confirm rib height, rib pitch, overlap and finished cover width.
Project Profile

Drawing / Sample-Based Profile

For orders where an existing panel profile, drawing or buyer sample controls the roll-forming geometry.

Send a profile drawing with all key dimensions before quotation.

Overall vs Cover Width

Do Not Confuse Overall Width with Effective Cover Width

The formed sheet is wider than the area it actually covers after side laps are installed. Using overall width to calculate roof coverage can leave the project short of material.

01

Overall Width

The physical edge-to-edge width of one finished roofing sheet after profiling.

02

Effective Cover Width

The installed coverage after the required side overlap or interlock is allowed for.

03

Side Lap

Confirm which rib or corrugation overlaps the next sheet and whether the profile has a defined installation direction.

04

Project Quantity

Calculate sheet count and square-meter coverage from the effective cover width, not only the total sheet width.

Overall width is a production dimension; effective cover width is an installation dimension.

Both belong on the project review when sheet quantity and roof coverage matter.

Profile Geometry

Rib Height and Pitch Define How the Profile Repeats

A profile cannot be identified reliably by a marketing name alone. Rib height, pitch, valley width and lap geometry should be confirmed from a drawing, sample or approved profile section.

01

Rib / Wave Height

Vertical profile height affects stiffness, appearance and how the panel fits the project detail.

02

Pitch

Measure the repeating center-to-center distance between corresponding ribs or corrugations.

03

Valley / Rib Geometry

Check the actual formed shape where screws, overlaps, flashings or accessories rely on the profile.

04

Profile Drawing

For replacement or project-specific panels, send a dimensioned section drawing rather than only a product photo.

BMT vs TCT

BMT and TCT Are Not the Same Thickness

Roofing-sheet quotations can become misleading when one supplier describes the base steel and another describes the fully coated product. The thickness basis should be written clearly on the RFQ.

TermWhat It Refers ToWhy It Matters
BMT — Base Metal ThicknessThe thickness of the steel substrate before metallic and organic coatings are added.Useful when substrate gauge and structural / forming behavior are the purchasing basis.
TCT — Total Coated ThicknessThe overall thickness after the metallic coating and paint system are included. Can be numerically higher than BMT, so it should not be compared as if it were the same measurement basis.
Finished ProfileThe profiled sheet made from the coated flat feedstock.Roll forming changes geometry, not the thickness basis used in the original material specification.
Write the thickness basis, not only the number.

For example, a buyer should state whether the quoted thickness is BMT or TCT when comparing suppliers.

Color Options

Confirm the Roofing Color by Reference or Approved Sample

Color should be confirmed together with PPGI / PPGL substrate, paint system, gloss and surface appearance. Website swatches help navigation but are not a production acceptance standard.

Reference System

RAL Color

Use the RAL reference already specified by the roofing, cladding or project requirement.

Repeat Orders

Buyer Sample

Use a retained roofing sheet, approved swatch or physical sample when color continuity matters.

Appearance

Gloss / Matt / Textured

The same nominal color can appear different at another gloss level or texture.

Mass Production

Sample Approval

Approve the physical sample or project color standard before the factory releases appearance-sensitive production.

Paint System

Color and Paint System Should Be Confirmed Separately

A RAL code defines a color reference, not the entire coating system. The roofing-sheet manufacturer still needs the approved paint route, top / back coating requirements, gloss and forming conditions.

01

PE / SMP / HDP / PVDF

Use the paint-system route specified by the project or approved color-coated coil specification.

02

Top Side

Confirm color, gloss, texture and visible-face paint requirements.

03

Back Side

Back-coat color and film requirement should be stated separately where the project controls the rear face.

04

No Fixed Lifetime Table

Service performance depends on the actual paint formulation, film build, substrate, exposure, forming and warranty basis—not only the resin name.

Roll Forming

The Paint and Metallic Coating Must Survive the Profile

The factory should judge the finished roofing sheet after profiling, not only the flat PPGI or PPGL feedstock. Tight bends, ribs and valleys can reveal coating damage that was not visible on the mother coil.

01

Profile Accuracy

Confirm the formed rib height, pitch and cover width against the approved profile drawing.

02

Paint at Bends

Inspect tight formed areas for cracking, flaking or visible damage where the project requires that level of review.

03

Metallic-Coating Condition

PPGI and PPGL use different metallic-coated substrates, so the finished profile should remain linked to the correct substrate route.

04

Protective Film

If protective film remains during roll forming, confirm that route before factory production rather than treating it as an afterthought.

The flat coil is not the final product.

The finished corrugated or trapezoidal panel is the real item that needs to fit, overlap and retain an acceptable painted surface.

Finished Sheet Inspection

Check the Profile, Paint and Cut Edges on the Actual Roofing Sheet

The mother coil MTC and paint records do not prove every finished-profile dimension. Final factory inspection should review the actual sheet after roll forming and cutting.

Geometry

Cover Width & Profile

Confirm overall width, effective cover width, rib pitch and profile consistency against the approved drawing.

Painted Surface

Scratch, Dent & Forming Damage

Inspect visible painted faces, ribs and valleys for handling or forming damage that could affect the delivered appearance.

Color coated roofing sheet cut edge inspection
Edges

Cut End & Side Edge

Check cut squareness, burr, local paint chipping and the newly exposed steel edge where the finished design leaves it visible.

Cut Edge

The Cut Edge Is Not the Same as the Factory-Coated Face

The broad faces carry the original paint over the metallic-coated substrate. Cutting the roofing sheet to final length creates a new edge, so edge condition and transport protection should be reviewed separately.

01

Finished Length

Measure the actual cut sheet length required by the roof layout or panel schedule.

02

Cut Squareness

Out-of-square ends can complicate eave, ridge and overlap alignment during installation.

03

Burr & Paint Chipping

Inspect the new edge after cutting rather than assuming the factory-coated surface continues through the cut.

04

Edge Protection

Long painted sheet stacks need packing that protects exposed ends and corners from impact and abrasion.

Long Sheet Handling

Long Roofing Sheets Need Full-Length Support

A thin profiled sheet can be damaged by poor lifting or by support only at the two ends. Factory stacking and shipment planning should follow the finished sheet length and profile stiffness.

01

Multiple Level Supports

Use several support points under long stacks to reduce local bending and profile deformation.

02

Profile-to-Profile Stacking

Keep the formed sheets aligned so ribs and valleys nest consistently without crushing the profile.

03

Separate Lengths / Profiles

Different finished lengths or profile types should remain physically separated and clearly identified.

04

Loading Route

Forklift, crane and truck / container loading should avoid concentrated pressure on unsupported painted sheets.

Long color coated roofing sheet stacking and support
MTC & Profile Traceability

Trace the Substrate, Paint and Finished Profile Together

Roofing sheet traceability should continue beyond the mother coil. The substrate route, metallic coating, paint system, color reference, roll-forming profile and finished stack identity should point to the same delivered product.

01PPGI / PPGL mother coil
02MTC / metallic coating record
03Paint system / approved color
04Roll-forming profile
05Finished length / stack ID
06Shipment documents
A finished roofing stack should trace back to the correct painted mother coil.

This matters when one project uses several colors, profiles, lengths or substrate routes in the same shipment.

Factory Packing

Protect the Painted Surface Without Crushing the Profile

A color coated roofing sheet supplier should pack the finished profiled stack differently from flat coil. The package must protect ribs, painted faces, cut edges and long-sheet geometry at the same time.

01

Profile Support

Use level dunnage and stack alignment that supports the sheet without flattening ribs or high points.

02

Band Position

Steel bands should use suitable protectors and should not concentrate pressure directly on unsupported profile peaks.

03

Paint & Edge Protection

Use clean separators, end / corner protection and waterproof outer wrapping where required.

04

Dry Packing

Do not seal obvious rainwater or process water inside a painted roofing-sheet package before export.
