Keep the Full HRB Grade on the Order

HRB400 and HRB500 belong to the Chinese hot-rolled ribbed reinforcement system. The order should use the complete project-required grade identity, especially when a suffix or additional requirement is specified.

01

Standard

Use GB 1499.2 as the product-standard route where the project calls for Chinese hot-rolled ribbed reinforcement.

02

Full Grade

Write HRB400, HRB500 or the complete specified suffix grade. Do not shorten a project-controlled grade during quotation.

03

Nominal Diameter

Order by the standard-defined nominal size rather than the maximum rib-to-rib outside measurement.

04

Delivery Condition

Confirm straight bar, coil / decoiled route where applicable, finished length and bundle requirement.

HRB400 HRB500 GB 1499.2 grade and purchase order review
Do not drop an “E” or other specified grade suffix during quotation.

The full grade on the design document, purchase order, bundle identity and MTC should remain consistent.

Grade Selection

HRB400 and HRB500 Are Different Strength Classes

The grade number identifies a different strength class within the GB reinforcing-steel route. Select the grade from the structural design or project specification rather than upgrading or substituting material only because a higher grade appears stronger.

400 MPa Yield-Strength Class

HRB400

Use where the project and structural design specify the HRB400 grade route.

  • Keep the exact suffix if one is specified.
  • Confirm nominal diameter and delivery form.
  • Inspect mechanical results against the applicable grade requirement.
500 MPa Yield-Strength Class

HRB500

Use where the project and structural design specify the HRB500 grade route.

  • Do not substitute automatically for HRB400.
  • Keep the exact suffix if one is specified.
  • Confirm mechanical and bend-related requirements from the project standard.

Higher grade is not automatic permission to substitute.

Bar spacing, design assumptions, ductility requirements, bend details and project approvals still control whether a grade change is acceptable.

Nominal Size & Rib Geometry

Nominal Diameter Is Not the Maximum Rib-to-Rib Diameter

HRB rebar is a deformed bar. The transverse and longitudinal ribs sit above the bar body, so a caliper reading across the highest points is not the same thing as the nominal diameter used for ordering, reference mass and standard compliance.

01

Nominal Diameter

Use the standard-defined nominal size as the product designation.

02

Transverse Rib Height

Measure the deformation feature using the applicable standard method rather than treating it as extra nominal diameter.

03

Rib Spacing

Check the repeating distance and rib pattern where dimensional inspection is required.

04

Longitudinal Rib

Where present, review it as part of the deformation geometry and rolling identity.

Do not approve a bar size from one outside-diameter caliper reading.

Nominal size, deformation geometry and mass per metre are different controls.

HRB rebar nominal diameter rib height and rib spacing inspection
Mass per Metre

Use Unit Mass as a Size and Quantity Control

Reference mass per metre helps connect nominal diameter, ordered length and theoretical quantity. Actual bundle weight answers a different question and should be reconciled according to the contract or inspection plan.

01

Reference Mass

Use the value and tolerance basis defined by GB 1499.2 for the selected nominal size.

02

Controlled Sample Length

Mass inspection should use a measured sample length and suitable scale, not a visual estimate from bundle size.

03

Theoretical Piece Weight

Reference mass × ordered bar length provides a planning figure for piece and bundle reconciliation.

04

Actual Bundle Weight

Used for loading, lifting, shipping and settlement where the commercial terms require measured weight.

Mechanical Properties

Grade Strength, Ductility and Bend Performance Must Stay on the Same Standard Route

HRB400 and HRB500 are different grade classes, but the purchase decision is not based on yield strength alone. Tensile behavior, elongation, bend / rebend acceptance and any project-specific seismic or ductility requirement should be reviewed against the full grade designation.

SubstitutionDo not replace with HRB500 without project approval.Do not downgrade to HRB400 without project approval.
The “E” suffix, when specified, is part of the grade—not a marketing label.

Keep the suffix through quotation, production identity, testing, bundle tags and MTC review.

Factory Inspection

Inspect the Rebar, Test Results and Grade Identity Separately

A correct rolling mark does not prove tensile performance, and an acceptable tensile report does not prove rib geometry, unit mass or finished length. Final inspection should keep each control independent.

Rolling Mark & Bundle Tag

Use the Bar Marking as One Identity Check, Not the Only One

The rolled identification on the bar helps distinguish the product, but shipment release should also reconcile the physical bundle, bundle tag and mill documents.

01

Rolling Identification

Check that the physical bar carries the required product identification for the applicable GB route.

02

Bundle Tag

Grade, nominal size, heat / lot and bundle identity should remain linked to the actual bundle.

03

MTC

The mill certificate should match the material identity and test results for the delivered lot.

04

Do Not Rely on Appearance

HRB400 and HRB500 can look very similar. Grade confirmation requires identity and documentation, not visual judgment.

Heat & MTC Traceability

Trace the Full HRB Grade from Production Lot to Shipment

Traceability should connect the steel mill or production lot, full grade designation, nominal diameter, bar length, bundle tag, mechanical results and shipment documents.

01Steel mill / heat or production lot
02GB 1499.2 / full HRB grade
03Nominal diameter / product form
04Mechanical / bend test results
05Bundle tag / finished length
06MTC / packing list / shipment
Grade identity must survive cutting, rebundling and export preparation.

If straight bars are cut to a project length, the new bundle still needs to trace back to the original material lot and full HRB grade.

Length & Bundle Control

Keep Different Grades, Diameters and Lengths Physically Separate

Long ribbed bars can look almost identical across adjacent sizes and grades. Factory bundling should make the ordered material easy to verify before loading.

01

Finished Bar Length

Measure against the ordered length and the applicable dimensional tolerance.

02

Grade Separation

HRB400 and HRB500 bundles should not depend on visual appearance to remain separated.

03

Diameter Separation

Different nominal sizes should remain in distinct bundles with matching tags.

04

Bundle Count & Weight

Reconcile bundle quantity, piece count where required and shipment weight against the packing list.

HRB rebar length grade diameter and bundle inspection
Export Packing & Loading

Long HRB Rebar Bundles Need Multiple Support and Restraint Points

Export preparation should keep bars aligned, bundle tags protected and long bundles supported without excessive sagging or one-point bending during lifting.

01

Multiple Steel Straps

Use several appropriately spaced restraints along the bar length to keep the bundle stable.

02

Multiple Level Supports

Long bundles should rest on several support points instead of being supported only at the ends.

03

Protected Tags

Bundle identity should remain readable through warehouse handling, loading and shipment.

04

Final Cargo Reconciliation

Check grade, diameter, length, bundle count and documents against the actual cargo before release.

Ordering Questions

Questions Buyers Ask an HRB400 / HRB500 Rebar Manufacturer

What is the difference between HRB400 and HRB500?

They are different strength classes within the GB hot-rolled ribbed reinforcement route. The project specification should determine which grade is used; a higher grade should not be substituted automatically.

What does the “E” suffix mean for an HRB order?

Where an E-suffix grade is specified, keep it as part of the complete grade identity throughout quotation, production, testing, tags and MTC review. Do not shorten it to the base HRB grade.

Can HRB400 and HRB500 be identified only by appearance?

No. Similar ribbed bars can look nearly identical. Use the required rolling identification, bundle tag and supporting material documents to confirm the actual grade.

How should HRB rebar diameter be checked?

Use the nominal size and dimensional inspection method required by GB 1499.2. A single caliper reading across the highest rib peaks is not automatically the nominal diameter.

Do you check unit weight as well as diameter?

Yes. Mass per metre is an important size and quantity control. It should be checked using the applicable standard method and a controlled sample rather than estimated visually.

Can HRB rebar be cut to project lengths?

Cut-to-length supply can be discussed where included in the order. The new finished length and rebundled material identity should then be checked and kept traceable to the source lot.
