PPGI Is More Than a Colored Steel Surface

The visible color is only the final surface the buyer sees. A workable PPGI order starts with the galvanized steel substrate, then confirms pretreatment, primer, top paint, back coat and the way the finished coil will be formed.

01Steel SubstrateStrength, thickness and formability begin here.
02Zinc CoatingThe galvanized metallic coating is a separate order item.
03PretreatmentPart of the coating system before organic paint application.

Do not compare PPGI only by color and price per ton.

Two coils can use the same color name while having different substrates, zinc coating, paint systems, film build, gloss and forming behavior.

PPGI vs GI

PPGI and Galvanized Coil Are Not Interchangeable

PPGI uses galvanized steel as the metallic-coated substrate and adds a coil-applied organic paint system. Ordinary GI coil does not automatically include the color, gloss and paint-film requirements of a PPGI order.

01

Galvanized Steel Coil

Defines the zinc-coated substrate route. Grade, zinc coating and dimensions still matter before painting.

02

PPGI Coil

Adds the organic coating system, color, gloss, surface appearance and back-coat requirement.

03

Paint Cannot Correct the Wrong Substrate

A visually acceptable top coat does not fix an unsuitable base grade, zinc coating or forming condition.

PPGI versus galvanized steel coil comparison
Galvanized Substrate

Start with the Steel Under the Paint

The galvanized substrate determines much of the coil's forming and strength behavior. The factory review should confirm the base-steel designation and zinc coating before discussing the decorative finish.

01

Base-Steel Designation

Use the commercial, forming, drawing or structural designation required by the downstream product.

02

Zinc Coating

Keep the galvanized metallic coating requirement separate from the top paint and back paint.

03

Thickness & Formability

Roofing, panels and formed products need a substrate that suits the actual roll-forming or bending route.

04

Technical Standards

ASTM A653/A653M is one important galvanized-substrate route; ASTM A755/A755M and BS EN 10169 address prepainted / coil-coated steel product requirements.

Paint System

Choose the Paint System Before Comparing Price

PE, SMP, HDP and PVDF are common procurement routes in the color-coated steel market. The final primer, topcoat, back coat, film requirement and project acceptance basis should still come from the actual approved coating system rather than from the short name alone.

Polyester

PE

A common route for regular color-coated coil orders where the project accepts the specified polyester system.

  • Confirm color and gloss.
  • Confirm top / back paint.
  • Review forming before mass production.
Silicone-Modified Polyester

SMP

Used where the buyer or project specifically calls for a silicone-modified polyester coating system.

  • Confirm substrate and film spec.
  • Confirm sample approval.
  • Do not compare only by resin name.
High-Durability Polyester

HDP

A common commercial purchasing description for higher-durability polyester systems; the actual coating specification still comes from the approved paint system.

  • No fixed service-life promise.
  • Confirm environment and forming.
  • Use supplier coating data when required.
Fluoropolymer Route

PVDF

Used where the project specifies a fluoropolymer / PVDF coating route and its corresponding color, film and processing requirements.

  • Confirm exact coating system.
  • Confirm color approval basis.
  • Confirm forming conditions.

No fixed “PE = X years / PVDF = Y years” table.

Actual performance depends on the approved coating formulation, film build, substrate, exposure environment, forming, maintenance and warranty basis.

Color Options

Custom Colors Available for PPGI Coil

Color should be confirmed together with the paint system, gloss, surface texture and final product. We can work from RAL references, buyer samples or approved project colors.

Color Reference

RAL Color Matching

Send the required RAL reference when the project already uses an established color code.

Repeat / Brand Orders

Buyer Sample Matching

A retained panel, approved color sample or buyer-supplied sample can be used as the production reference.

Surface Appearance

Gloss / Matt / Textured

The same color can look different at another gloss level or with a matte or textured surface.

Before Mass Production

Color Sample Approval

For appearance-sensitive orders, approve the agreed sample before the full production lot is released.

Top Paint & Back Paint

Color Is Only One Part of the Paint Specification

The visible top side and the back side do different jobs. The manufacturer should confirm each side separately instead of reducing the order to a single color name.

01

Primer

Confirm the primer as part of the selected coating system and substrate preparation route.

02

Top Paint

Define resin system, color, gloss, texture and required film specification for the visible side.

03

Back Paint

Specify the reverse-side coating separately when back-side appearance or assembly environment matters.

04

Protective Film

Add film only where the finished surface needs extra protection during forming, handling or installation.

Coil Configuration

Make Sure the PPGI Coil Fits the Roll-Forming Line

Thickness and width describe the strip. Coil ID, maximum coil weight and coil OD determine whether the buyer can actually load the material onto the production line.

01

Thickness × Width

Send the finished coated-strip size required by the roofing, panel or forming line.

02

Coil ID

Specify the internal diameter when the uncoiler has a fixed mandrel requirement.

03

Maximum Coil Weight

State any crane, rack, container or line limit before the factory selects or rewinds the coil.

04

Maximum Coil OD

Add an outer-diameter limit when equipment clearance or storage space is restricted.

PPGI coil ID weight and dimension inspection
Roll Forming

The Paint Must Survive the Forming Route

PPGI is often delivered flat and used after corrugating, trapezoidal profiling, bending or other roll forming. A flat coil sample can look acceptable and still show paint or substrate problems after forming.

01

Profile Geometry

Confirm the substrate grade and thickness against the actual corrugated, trapezoidal or panel profile.

02

Bend / Paint Review

Where specified, evaluate the coating after the required bending or forming route rather than only on the flat surface.

03

Formed Corners

Sharp folds can reveal cracking, loss of adhesion or substrate issues that were not obvious before forming.

04

Protective Film During Forming

If film should stay on during roll forming, confirm the requirement before production and slitting.

Color & Coating Inspection

Measure the Paint System, Not Just the Steel Thickness

A correct substrate thickness does not prove the ordered color or paint film. Factory inspection should connect color approval, gloss, paint-film measurements and formed-sample behavior to the same production lot.

Paint Film

Coating Thickness

Use an appropriate coating-thickness instrument and the agreed inspection method for the paint system rather than a mechanical caliper.

Color & Gloss

Compare the production lot against the agreed color reference and gloss requirement using the specified approval method.

PPGI bend and coating adhesion review
Forming

Bend / Adhesion Review

Where required, inspect the coated surface after the agreed bend or forming route because final products are rarely used as perfectly flat coil.

Color Consistency

One Color Name Does Not Guarantee One Production Color

A repeat order should reference more than the word “blue” or “grey.” Color code, approved sample, gloss, texture and production-lot control all affect how the finished surface is judged.

01

RAL / Project Reference

Keep the same documented color reference across quotation, sample approval and production release.

02

Approved Physical Sample

For brand or repeat-order work, retain the approved panel or agreed buyer sample where color continuity matters.

03

Gloss & Texture

A matching hue at a different gloss or texture can still look visibly different after installation.

04

Production Lot

Keep color and coating inspection linked to the actual painted-coil lot instead of treating the color sample as a separate marketing item.

PPGI approved color sample and repeat order review
Factory Slitting

Slitting Protects the Width — but Creates New Edges

Factory slitting prepares narrow PPGI strip for trims, panels and other processing, but the operation also creates fresh cut edges and can damage a visible paint surface if handling is poor.

01

Finished Slit Width

State the exact width required by the buyer's forming or accessory line.

02

Burr & Cut Edge

Review burr and the newly exposed edge separately from the original painted face.

03

Paint-Edge Damage

Visible scratches, chipping or pressure marks near the slit edge should be controlled during rewinding and packing.

04

Mother-Coil Identity

Slitting changes width and package weight, not the original substrate, coating system or color-lot identity.

PPGI coil slitting cut edge and surface inspection
Protective Film

Does the Painted Surface Need Protective Film?

Protective film is useful only when it matches the surface, forming route and installation process. It should be specified as an order item rather than automatically added to every PPGI coil.

01

Film Yes / No

Confirm whether the buyer needs film at all and which painted side requires protection.

02

During Roll Forming

State whether the film must remain on through profiling or should be removed before the forming operation.

03

Matt / Textured Surfaces

Film compatibility should be reviewed with non-standard textures rather than assumed from a regular glossy surface.

04

Removal Stage

Installation and storage plans should account for when the protective layer is intended to be removed.

Color & Material Traceability

Color Traceability Matters as Much as Steel Traceability

Mill, manufacturer and factory records should connect the galvanized substrate, zinc coating, paint system, approved color, painted-coil lot and any slit-coil processing through to shipment.

01Galvanized substrate / coil ID
02Zinc coating & base steel
03Paint system / coating lot
04Color code / approved sample
05Painted / slit coil identity
06Shipment documents
A repeat order should point back to the approved color basis.

Steel traceability alone cannot prove that a new production lot matches the agreed project color, gloss and paint system.

PPGI color coating MTC and coil traceability
Factory Packing

Protect the Painted Face, Coil Edge and Approved Surface

A PPGI steel coil supplier should match packing to the paint surface, protective film, coil orientation and slit width instead of hiding everything behind the phrase “standard seaworthy packing.”

01

Stable Coil Support

Use suitable skids, saddles or supports to control movement during handling and transport.

02

Edge Protection

Protect painted coil edges and narrow slit coils from impact and banding damage.

03

No Direct Strap Abrasion

Do not allow steel bands to cut directly into a visible painted edge without suitable protection.

04

Dry Wrapping & Identification

Protect the package from water entry while keeping color, coating system and coil identity linked to the physical coil.
